Welcome to our #GRA16 Blog for All American Boys

Hello and welcome! I'm Ms. Coniglio, an English teacher at St. Elizabeth CHS in Thornhill, Ontario.

This has been a summer of firsts for me: first time blogger, first time participating in the Global Read Aloud, and first time experimenting with the Twitterverse.

I'm looking forward to connecting with Ms. Bauer's classes this year and other teachers and students from around the world. I truly believe in the power of literature to change the way we see ourselves and the world--this is one of the reasons I teach English.

If you haven't read the book yet, I think you will LOVE All American Boys. It is a page turner! Check out this great book teaser trailer:

Please take some time and explore the resources on this blog. There is more to come!

  1. Happy to have joined this group. It will be good to see what the students' thoughts are about this book. Looking forward to starting in October. I'm a librarian at an all boys school in Tokyo, Japan. I just hope I get some boys to participate. I'll keep you posted.

    1. Great to have you! My classes are very excited to begin. I followed you on Twitter as well. How are you creating buzz for the book and the GRA at your school?

  2. I am so happy to be a part of the group. I do have some boys in my group. I had all girls last year. I will be meeting them on Friday. I probably will have them add to the blog.

  4. I teach in Florida. We are an International Baccalaureate school, and I teach five classes of students in the IB program: two are seniors and three are AP Lit taught to sophomores. I also teach one class of sophomores who are not in the IB program. These are students who did not pass our ninth grade state assessment. Most of the students are Hispanic or African American, and more boys than girls. I have been getting them accustomed to being read to as I am currently reading The Truth about Alice to them. Do most of you provide copies of the books to students? How often do you connect with the other classes? What problems have you encountered? What has been successful for you? Obviously, this is my first time participating.

    1. My first time participating too. The GRA website said individual copies of the book are not necessary--just read aloud. My amazing principal offered to buy me a class set that will be shared amongst my grade 9s, 10s, and 11s. Yana has done the GRA before.

    2. Hi Nan,

I did the Global Read Aloud 2 years ago with a class who was less than engaged in school. The power of feeling a part of something global and connected to so many people through a book was amazing. I project the ebook on the wall and read aloud. My class connected with another class via a blog and discussion board. We had our students do surveys and responded to quotes, and we compared the results. We introduced ourselves through video and had lunch together once via Skype. My teacher partner and I shared resources. Our students collaborated on a google slideshow with great results.
